Major Domain Name Real Estate Shakeup as ICANN Votes on Millions of New TLDs

This week’s ICANN meeting in Paris, France could start a completely new land rush for Internet domain names when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) votes today on opening up the domain naming convention to millions of additional top-level extensions.
Under the new proposal, top-level domains (TLD) would not be limited to .com, .net, .org or other currently existing extensions. New top-level domains, such as .love, .world, .xxx, .ebay or any other combination that does not yet exist as an official TLD could also be created.
In order to prevent cybersquatting, the price tag for these new domains is expected to be initially set at about US$50,000, with preference for names going to trademark holders. If ICANN votes in favor of the proposal, the new TLDs are expected to be available in 2009.
